Today is a date that resonates in the heart with sadness and global awareness. The United States attacked on its own land. Different for us, not so unusual for other countries. Thousands of us left the planet. Different for us, not so unusual for other countries.
Other generations remember December 7th or D-Day, but waking up to 9/11 throws me back to being in a morning meeting and as people staggered in late, whispers of the terror and frozen horror unfolded as buildings collapsed, as did my heart throughout the day. Stories of fatal heroism, astounding survivals, a city literally turned upside down are all now part of heritage and history.
What it thundered and screamed to me was the last words of those on the plane: I love you. Love outlives death and terror and war and horror. Babies born, lives of emptiness turned into pearls, rebuilding our hearts after the wounding are all done with love.
Today I will remember that as even skyscrapers collapse, I stand for love until I too, melt into Mother Earth.
